Pot Hole. Wot Hole?

Whereas many residents are happy with the resolution to the High Street’s pothole outside The Red Lion pub on the High Street yesterday, more questions are raised over why another pothole just 15 yards away wasn’t also filled.

Overton Radio and The Red Lion pub first reported the original pothole on the High Street in April this year.

Yesterday evening (24th July 2026), workmen filled the original pothole.

However, a pothole outside 46 High Street – directly opposite The Red Lion – has also been apparent for weeks.

Council workers failed to solve both problems at the same time.

Surely it would be more cost efficient to the rate-payer to have both done at the same time“, says Red Lion Landlady Victoria Harber.

“It’s astonishing that efficiency at Basingstoke and Deane is so bad that we now have to engage another company – through the local Council – to solve a problem that’s just 15 yards away.

It comes as Overton Rugby Club humorously entered a team for this year’s Wheelbarrow Race called the ‘The Pothole Possee’.

Hampshire County Council received 46,712 ‘safety defect reports’ (including potholes) over a two-year period with 2,781 compensation claims submitted by motorists for vehicle damage caused by road defects.
