The village is mourning the passing of Charlie Thorn, a much-loved local figure who gave nearly five decades of service to the community.
Charlie passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday 4 February, with his partner Brenda and family by his side.
For 47 years, Charlie was at the heart of village life and will be remembered for the many roles he took on, often quietly and without fuss. His work included supporting the local Play Scheme, helping at Overton Swimming Pool, serving with the Overton Black Arrows, stepping into the role of Father Christmas for countless local events, and becoming what many described as the village’s unsung hero.
His impact was felt most strongly at the swimming pool, where he taught generations of children and adults to swim. In 2012, his dedication was recognised when he received the BBC South Sports Unsung Hero Award. The award was presented to him in front of the pupils he had taught to swim, in a moment that reflected just how many lives he had helped shape.
Charlie’s kindness, patience and steady presence will be deeply missed across the village.
Our thoughts are with his partner Brenda, his family, and everyone who knew and loved him.
