Village centre postbox to be upgraded to new solar-powered design

The postbox in Overton village centre is set to be upgraded as part of a nationwide rollout of new solar-powered postboxes by Royal Mail.

Royal Mail is introducing around 3,500 of the new boxes across the UK, changing the familiar look of the red pillar boxes that have stood on British streets for almost two centuries.

The new design includes solar panels on the top of the postbox. These power a digitally operated drawer, which allows customers to post small parcels as well as letters.

Items up to the size of a shoebox can be sent using the new pillar boxes.

Royal Mail has described the project as the biggest redesign in its 175-year history.

The change comes as the company faces growing competition from other delivery firms and looks for new ways to make sending parcels easier for customers.

While work takes place on the village centre postbox, residents can continue to post their mail at the Post Office inside the Co-op, or use any of the other postboxes around the village.
