Peacock - Overton

Overton’s peacock rescue

One of Overton’s remaining village Peacocks is owing his life to a well-respected local man, a kindly nearby vet and a kind-hearted couple from Headley.

For the past day or so it’s been noted that Pierre (or Percy) has been looking ill around his normal haunt near the ‘Top Shop’.

For the past twenty years or so, Overton has been famous for having two Peacocks in the village.

After some locals contacted local wildlife enthusiast Shane King today, fearing that Pierre was looking ‘poorly’, the local roofer made strides to ensure the Peacock was in the best of hands.

61-year-old Shane King took him to The Hampshire Vet, an independent veterinary surgeon near the Holly Blue pub in Basingstoke. The vet kindly gave the bird some pain medication.

We understand that the pain relief was administered free of charge from ‘The Hampshire Vet’.

Mr King who has lived in Overton for almost 35-years then transported the colourful bird to Katie’s Wildlife Rescue at Headley near Thatcham. Mr King is known for his local roofing business.

While driving the impressive Asiatic peafowl to his carers, Mr King said Pierre ‘fanned’ in the back of his car… perhaps showing his love and appreciation for his rescuer’s care and assistance.

Katie Walton from Katie’s Wildlife Rescue told Overton Radio, “The peacock is mostly fine, we met Shane earlier today who was kind enough to get him to the vets, get him sedated and bring him to us.

“We think he’s going to be okay. It looks like both legs are giving the poor boy grief, but his left leg is worse ad his foot is slightly swollen.”

Husband and wife duo Katie and Joe Walton run Katie’s Wildlife Rescue in Headley. They are in contact with another Vet to get more ‘meds’ for the Peacock.

Katie and Joe run their rescue service entirely through kindness and donations.

Today’s Overton peacock rescue story comes as the Shropshire village of Tutbury hit the national news this week. The village of just 3,200 people has an ostentation of 40 peacocks living among its usual, tax-paying, human residents.

It’s thought that Pierre is more than 20-years old. Conflicting reports question whether Percy and Pierre are still ‘living together’.

In the wild, Peacocks are known to live to up to 20 years, longer if cared for in captivity.

From us at Overton Radio, I think we owe The Hampshire Vet, Katie, Joe and Shane a big thank you.
