Overton Parish Council has announced a bold new initiative to protect pedestrians – and their shoes – on Bridge Street: the village’s ducks will soon be wearing “Anti-Splash” high-visibility vests.
The quirky measure comes after repeated complaints from residents about soggy ankles during the ducks’ daily crossings. The specially designed vests are made from waterproof material and feature reflective strips, ensuring both safety and dryness for all.
Parish Council spokesperson Jo King explained the reasoning behind the move:
“While we love our ducks, their enthusiasm for puddles has been… energetic. These vests will reduce accidental splashes and make them more visible to cyclists and drivers alike.”
The vests will be tailored to fit each bird individually and are said to include tiny harnesses that gently discourage diving into puddles. Local children have been invited to help with fittings, making it a community event.
Reactions among residents have been mixed. One passerby said, “I never thought I’d see the day when ducks are safer than humans on the street!” Meanwhile, a local duck enthusiast added, “They look a bit like tiny traffic wardens, but I suppose it’s for the greater good.”
The project is set to roll out next Monday, with a ceremonial first walk planned at 10am. Organizers promise photo opportunities, careful waddling, and – most importantly – dry shoes for everyone.
