Residents in Overton are being invited to step into the world of Jane Austen at a special free event this June, offering a rare family perspective on one of Britain’s most loved writers.
The Overton Jane Austen Trails Group will host My Austen Heritage: Growing up at Chawton House at St Mary’s Hall on Wednesday, June 17, from 7pm to 8:30pm. The talk will be delivered by Caroline Jane Knight, widely recognised as Austen’s fifth great-niece.
Drawing on personal memories, family traditions and photographs, Caroline will share what it was like growing up at Chawton House, the historic estate closely linked to Austen’s life and legacy. Her stories promise a vivid picture of daily life within a home steeped in literary history.
The talk will explore her childhood experiences, from attending the local village school to helping care for the estate’s grounds, as well as family moments such as cooking with her grandmother and using items connected to Austen herself. These personal insights offer a rare glimpse into how Austen’s legacy has been passed down through generations.
Caroline will also reflect on her teenage years working in the Chawton House tearoom, where she met visitors from around the world, and how stories of Austen’s independence and wit shaped her own path. The evening will include her account of the emotional end of her family’s 400-year connection to the house, and how that history continues to influence her work today.
Now an author and heritage advocate, Caroline is involved in projects including a family archive, literacy work and events celebrating Austen’s life and writing. Her talk promises a unique perspective that brings history to life through lived experience.
The event is free to attend, though spaces are limited and booking is advised. Residents can reserve a place online via Eventbrite.
