It was a masterclass in attacking football at Bridge Street on Saturday as Overton United dismantled AFC Netley with a ruthless 7-0 victory in front of an ecstatic home crowd.
The goals came in waves, starting with Adam Hargood calmly converting a penalty in the 35th minute to break the deadlock. Just before the referee could reach for the half-time whistle, Macauley Martin doubled the lead, giving United a commanding cushion at the break.
If AFC Netley hoped for any respite after the interval, they were sorely mistaken. Cole Oates slotted home in the 53rd minute to make it three, and five minutes later, Jack Hannam added a fourth to firmly extinguish any hopes of a Netley comeback.
United were relentless. Dan Schofield got in on the act in the 75th, before late strikes from Toby Sentch (84’) and Louis Wilson (89’) capped off a clinical display of finishing and fluid football.
The result keeps Overton United hot on the heels of league leaders Broughton, trimming the gap to just two points. Broughton were held to a 1-1 draw away at Silchester — a result that could loom large as the title race enters its final stretch.
But the weekend of football isn’t over just yet.
This morning, Overton United’s Sunday side are back in action as they welcome The Bell Inn to Berrydown in the Andover Sunday Football League Division Two. Kick-off is at 10:30am, and the stakes are high. United sit five points clear at the summit, with two games in hand over closest rivals Charlton Wanderers. A win today could all but seal promotion, putting them in pole position for silverware.
One thing’s for sure: if Saturday’s fireworks are anything to go by, today’s visitors will need more than luck to leave with a result.
