Overton once again proved their dominance in the Rotten Hill Cup with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Whitchurch, securing the trophy for another year and delighting their travelling supporters.
In a tightly contested affair at Longmeadow, both sides went into the break goalless, with neither able to break the deadlock despite a flurry of chances. But it was Overton who emerged sharper in the second half, seizing control of the match through a clinical strike from Jared Wetherick. The forward found the net with a composed finish to give his side the edge.
Carl Bates doubled Overton’s lead shortly after, capitalising on a defensive lapse to slot home and put the result beyond doubt.
The match wasn’t short on standout performances. Overton goalkeeper Luke Stickland earned Player of the Match honours for a string of impressive saves that kept Whitchurch at bay, particularly during a sustained spell of pressure early in the second half. For Whitchurch, Keith Alderman was once again recognised for his consistent quality, claiming their Player of the Match award for the second year running.
With the win, Overton retain the Rotten Hill Cup and will host the next edition of the contest on home turf in 2026.
The day’s footballing feast kicked off with the Whitchurch girls securing a win over the Overton girls in the opening fixture. But the hosts hit back in the second youth match, with the Overton boys thumping Whitchurch 4-0 in a dominant display.
A hard-fought rivalry, a determined defence, and a cup staying right where it is – Overton’s mantlepiece is looking tidy once again.
