Overton Retain Rotten Hill Cup After Dramatic Comeback and Penalty Shootout Victory

Overton held their nerve to retain the Rotten Hill Cup in front of a packed crowd at the Overton Recreation Centre, capping off a day full of drama, goals, and proper grassroots football at its best.

The home side made the perfect start. Alex Sims fired Overton ahead early on, settling any nerves and giving the village plenty to cheer about. But Whitchurch had other ideas. They grew into the match, took control, and turned the game on its head in ruthless fashion.

With just five minutes left on the clock, Overton found themselves staring defeat in the face at 3–1 down. The cup looked to be slipping away.

What followed was nothing short of remarkable.

Overton refused to fold. Driven on by the home crowd, they launched a late fightback that will be talked about for years. Two goals in the space of five frantic minutes brought the scores level at 3–3, sending the match into a penalty shootout and the crowd into a frenzy.

From the spot, Overton were flawless. Every penalty was calmly dispatched. Whitchurch, by contrast, faltered under pressure, with two efforts crashing against the crossbar. The shootout finished 4–2, sealing victory for Overton and sparking scenes of celebration as fans poured onto the pitch.

The cup stays in Overton.

Earlier in the day, there was more success for the home side. Overton’s youth team delivered a commanding performance in the Junior Rotten Hill Cup, sweeping aside Whitchurch with a dominant 5–0 win. It set the tone for what would become a memorable day for the club from top to bottom.

From the juniors’ brilliance to the senior side’s grit and late heroics, this was a showcase of everything local football should be — passion, pride, and a refusal to give in.

One thing is certain: Rotten Hill Cup day delivered again.
