Overton Harriers Join National Effort to Help Women Keep Running Safely Through Winter

As the clocks prepare to go back and the darker evenings close in, Overton Harriers are encouraging local runners not to let the winter months dim their motivation. The club has joined forces with England Athletics’ “Let’s Lift the Curfew” campaign — a national initiative aimed at supporting women to stay active and feel safe while exercising outdoors after dark.

To mark the initiative, the Harriers are inviting anyone interested to join them for a taster run on Monday 27th October, meeting at 18:30 at the ORC on Bridge Street.

Two friendly, social runs will set off from the club:

  • 8km (5 miles) for those looking for a slightly longer stretch
  • 5km (3.2 miles) for those who prefer a shorter route

All paces are welcome — these are relaxed, no-pressure runs with frequent stops to ensure everyone stays together. Depending on the weather, the routes may mix road and trail sections.

Runners are encouraged to wear hi-vis clothing or a head torch for safety, though the club will have a few spares available. And the evening doesn’t end when the run does — there’ll be a social get-together afterwards, complete with cake, drinks, and a chat about practical ways to feel more confident running at night.

Anyone interested in joining should email committee@overtonharriers.org.uk so the club can keep an eye out for them on the night.
