Overton Biodiversity Society to Join Parish Council After Two Decades of Independence

After more than 20 years as an independent organisation, the Overton Biodiversity Society has announced that it will become a sub-group of Overton Parish Council from October this year.

The decision comes as both the chairman and secretary prepare to step down from their long-standing roles within the group. With membership numbers in decline, the Society acknowledged that replacing these key positions would be challenging.

Despite the shift, the group remains committed to its core mission. Existing activities such as the care and maintenance of Little Meadow, along with regular wildlife surveys, will continue under the new arrangement.

“This change gives us the chance to keep doing what we love without the administrative burden that’s become harder to manage with fewer hands on deck,” a spokesperson for the Society said. “We’re genuinely excited about what we can achieve working more closely with the Parish Council.”

The move is seen as a practical solution that ensures the group’s valuable conservation work can carry on into the future — albeit with a new structure and renewed support.

Overton Parish Council has welcomed the transition and says it looks forward to supporting the Society’s work as part of its broader commitment to environmental stewardship in the local community.
