The streets and backroads of Overton were buzzing with excitement today as the 36th staging of the Overton 5 Road Race drew in more than 500 runners, plus dozens of spectators who lined the route to cheer them on.
The race, a highlight of the village calendar, didn’t disappoint. 522 people took part in the race, and leading the pack was Harry Smith of Southampton Athletics Club, who stormed home in a course-record breaking time of 24 minutes and 37 seconds. His blistering pace has set a new benchmark for future competitors and earned plenty of applause from the crowd.
In the women’s race, Beth Kidger from Brighton put in an equally commanding performance, finishing in 27 minutes, 55 seconds to claim first place. Both winners spoke of the warm welcome they received from villagers and fellow athletes alike.
Local pride was also very much on display. Neil Martin was the first runner from Overton Harriers to finish, crossing the line in a strong 30 minutes and 59 seconds, while Lucy Pearson took the honours as the first Overton woman home with a determined run of 39 minutes and 44 seconds. Their efforts were cheered on loudly by friends, family, and neighbours.
But the Overton 5 isn’t just about fast times — it’s about community spirit. That was clear to see at the finish line, where the Whitchurch Scouts kept runners and supporters refreshed with much-needed drinks and snacks, while Sonny Jim’s ice cream van proved a big hit on what turned out to be a warm late-summer afternoon.
Adding to the festival atmosphere, Overton Radio provided the soundtrack for the day, with music and commentary from Rob and Paddy keeping spirits high before, during, and after the race.
Organisers praised both the runners and the volunteers who helped make the day possible, ensuring the Overton 5 continues to be one of the standout events on Hampshire’s running calendar.
