Overton’s Women’s Hardball Cricket team got off to a dream start in their debut match on Sunday, securing a memorable win against Grayshott in what can only be described as a textbook performance – with a bit of magic thrown in for good measure.
Travelling away for their first ever fixture, Overton made their intentions clear right from the off. Batting first, they put up an imposing total of 183 for 6 from their allotted 25 overs – thanks largely to a blistering innings from Jenny Wilson, who carved her name into club history with an unbeaten 101 from just 71 balls. It was a composed, classy, and commanding knock, filled with elegant boundaries and clever strokeplay, earning her a richly-deserved place in the record books.
With the bat laid to rest, Overton then turned up the heat in the field. A disciplined and well-drilled bowling performance, backed by sharp fielding, kept the home side under pressure throughout. Grayshott were restricted to 139 for 6, never quite managing to break free from Overton’s stranglehold.
For a first competitive outing, this was nothing short of exceptional – a performance full of promise, passion, and poise. There’ll be plenty more challenges ahead, but on this showing, Overton’s women are here to make a statement.
Well played, ladies – the hardball era has well and truly begun.
