Veterans, serving military personnel, and cadets in Overton will be entitled to free bus travel on Thursday, May 8, as the nation marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day—the day that signalled the end of World War II in Europe.
Stagecoach South has announced that all eligible members of the Armed Forces community—including those currently serving, veterans, and cadets—will be able to travel at no cost on its local bus services throughout the day. The initiative applies to services in Overton and the wider Stagecoach South network.
The company describes the move as part of its wider commitment to recognising the contributions and sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces, both past and present.
“We’re incredibly proud to employ many veterans, and it’s a privilege to recognise the bravery and dedication of our Armed Forces, cadets, and veterans,” said Marc Reddy, Managing Director at Stagecoach South.
“Offering free travel on VE 80 Day is a small gesture of appreciation for the enormous contribution made by our service men and women, past and present.”
To qualify for free travel, individuals must either be in uniform, present valid military ID, wear a veteran’s badge or medal, or, in the case of cadets, be in uniform.
VE Day—Victory in Europe Day—was first celebrated on May 8, 1945, following the formal surrender of Nazi Germany. This year’s 80th anniversary is being marked across the country with acts of remembrance, community events, and tributes to the wartime generation.
As part of local commemorations, a beacon lighting ceremony will take place at Sapley Lane Playing Fields in Overton at 9.30pm on Thursday evening, joining communities across the UK in a symbolic gesture of unity and remembrance.
Celebrations will continue into the weekend, with a special event at The Red Lion in Overton on Saturday, May 10. The day will feature live music, themed activities, and opportunities for residents to come together in honour of those who served.
Stagecoach South has also partnered with The D-Day Story Museum to unveil a specially decorated bus that pays tribute to the wartime generation. The company has been a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant since March 2015 and has consistently supported the military community, including through similar free travel offers on Remembrance Day and Armed Forces Weekends.
This latest initiative is also supported by Stagecoach’s Veterans Network, an internal employee-led group dedicated to supporting colleagues with military backgrounds and ensuring their voices help shape company policy.
As the nation reflects on one of the most significant moments in modern history, Overton is preparing to remember with pride—and a strong sense of community spirit.
