Residents in Overton are being encouraged to refresh their wardrobes and support sustainable living at a Pre-Loved Clothes Swap taking place next month as part of the village’s Green Weekend celebrations.
The event will be held at St Mary’s Hall on Saturday 6th June from 11am until 1pm, bringing together Sustainable Overton, 1st Overton Guides, and the Sustainability Lead from Testbourne Community School for a community initiative designed to reduce waste, save money and give unwanted clothes a second life.
Organisers say the swap is a chance for people to discover “new-to-you treasures”, clear out unwanted items and make more environmentally friendly choices by reusing clothes rather than sending them to landfill.
The event is open to all and all clothing will be free to take away, although visitors will have the option of making a donation to support Sustainable Overton or the 1st Overton Guides.
People who donate clothing in advance will receive an early entry ticket, giving them access between 11am and 11.30am for first choice of the available items. General entry will begin at 11.30am.
Organisers are collecting donations of both adult and children’s clothing, ideally on hangers, at several collection points in the run-up to the event.
Clothing can be dropped off at the Overton Scout and Guides Hut on Tuesday 2nd June from 6.45pm to 7.30pm and Thursday 4th June from 4.45pm to 5.45pm.
Donations can also be made at Testbourne Community School on Tuesday 2nd June from 3.30pm until 5pm at the bottom of the main car park near the Kingfisher Block, with students also able to hand items directly to Mrs Thompson in Room 53.
A further collection point will be available at 28 High Street, Overton, on Saturday 6th June from 10am until 12pm, while last-minute donations will also be accepted at St Mary’s Hall on the day between 9.30am and 10am.
The swap will also include a selection of school uniform for Testbourne Community School and Overton Primary School, offering families an affordable and sustainable way to prepare for the next school term.
Visitors will also be able to enjoy homemade cakes and drinks, on sale from 11am, with proceeds helping 1st Overton Guides raise funds for their upcoming trip to Switzerland. Both cash and card payments will be accepted.
Organisers hope the event will not only help local families but also encourage the community to think differently about fashion and waste, proving that one person’s unwanted item can become someone else’s perfect find.Residents in Overton are being encouraged to refresh their wardrobes and support sustainable living at a Pre-Loved Clothes Swap taking place next month as part of the village’s Green Weekend celebrations.
