All three Overton cricket matches abandoned after relentless rain wipes out weekend action

A Saturday of cricket across the Overton set-up was washed away, as heavy rain and poor ground conditions forced all three scheduled matches to be abandoned without a result.

It was a frustrating day for players, officials and supporters, with three separate fixtures affected and no play possible to reach a conclusion in any of them.

First XI left stranded after strong batting effort

The day began with the clash between Overton CC 1st XI and Odiham & Greywell CC 2nd XI, where Overton had put themselves in a strong position before the weather intervened.

Overton posted an impressive 285 for 9 from 43.4 overs, building a solid platform through the middle order after a competitive start. It looked like a total that could set up an exciting finish, but the rain arrived before the game could move into its decisive phase.

Despite hopes of a restart, the conditions did not improve enough for play to resume, and the match was eventually called off. Both sides were awarded 0 points.

Second XI fixture also falls victim to the weather

Elsewhere, the meeting between Andover CC 3rd XI and Overton CC 2nd XI followed a similar pattern.

Andover had reached 191 for 9 from 40 overs, setting up a tight finish. Overton’s bowling effort had kept them in the contest, with wickets spread through the attack and pressure building late in the innings.

But once again, the rain arrived at the wrong moment. With the outfield becoming unplayable and no safe window to continue, officials had no option but to abandon the fixture.

Another match ended with both sides taking 0 points, and both dressing rooms left wondering what might have been.

Third XI unable to finish in damp conditions

The final match of the day saw Overton CC 3rd XI take on Oakley’s 3rd XI in what was already a rain-affected contest.

Overton were dismissed for 110 from 34.1 overs, struggling to build momentum against a disciplined Oakley attack. The innings never fully got going, with regular wickets halting any recovery.

Oakley reached 34 for 1 from 6.3 overs in reply before the weather closed in once more. With rain falling steadily and conditions deteriorating, play could not continue.

The match was abandoned, leaving both sides with shared frustration and no result.
