Town Meadow hosted its annual Club Championship yesterday morning, with 22 members turning out to compete for two coveted trophies in glorious weather.
There was a fantastic mix of players taking part, with several younger members competing alongside more seasoned players. The event also saw one member take part in their first ever competition, making for a particularly special day on the course.
The Net Strokeplay competition went right down to the wire, with four players putting in impressive performances.
Toby Stupples matched his handicap with a net score of 54, while Graham Bond went one better with a net 53. Mike Rutherford came agonisingly close with a net 51, but the bragging rights ultimately went to Gary Bragg, who produced an outstanding net 50, finishing four shots under his handicap.
The Gross Strokeplay competition was equally competitive, with Gary Bragg recording a 66 and Toby Stupples a 65.
However, it was Graham Bond who once again came out on top. With a superb gross score of 61, just seven over par for the course, Bond successfully defended his title to become back-to-back Town Meadow Club Champion.
There were also a number of other highlights throughout the competition.
Richard Spooner took the nearest-the-pin prize on the first hole, while Paul Cooper produced arguably the shot of the day to win the ‘Nearest in 2 Shots’ competition on the ninth.
Cooper’s birdie came courtesy of an incredible hole-out from around 70 yards after a wayward tee shot, making for a spectacular second shot and a memorable moment.
The morning was rounded off with the raffle, with Paul Tarsey taking home the cash prize. Although there were a few raised eyebrows after he suspiciously managed to pull his own winning ticket!
Congratulations to all 22 members who took part, and especially to Gary Bragg and back-to-back champion Graham Bond on their fantastic performances.
