The Dever Society is urging Micheldever residents to attend an exhibition on proposed housing plans for Popham Airfield.
The exhibition will be held at The Warren Centre, Micheldever Station, on Tuesday, January 6, between 2pm and 8pm.
It is being run by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (BDBC) and will set out new housing proposals for the borough. Among them is a plan for a 4,250-home “garden village” on land at Popham Airfield.
The Dever Society, which was formed in 1990 to oppose earlier plans to build a town in the area, says it is important that local people attend and share their views.
In an email to members, the society said Popham Airfield has been recognised by both the government and the Civil Aviation Authority as a key General Aviation site. It added that the airfield is a valued local asset and should not be lost.
The email also suggested questions for residents to raise at the exhibition. These include concerns that Micheldever Station lies within Winchester District, not Basingstoke and Deane, and that a large development nearby could have a major impact on the small village.
Members are also questioning how Micheldever Station, which has an island platform and around one train an hour in each direction, could cope with a large increase in passenger numbers. Other concerns focus on proposed pedestrian and cycle links from Popham to the station, which would cross land in Winchester District, and whether Winchester City Council has agreed to this.
The Dever Society is not the only group opposing the plans.
Popham Airfield Matters has previously said the site is of national importance and should not be built on. A spokesperson said Popham was named one of the top five General Aviation airfields in the UK in December 2023.
They added that in December 2024, following a survey linked to the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Aviation and industry bodies, Popham was classified as Category A within the UK Strategic Airfield Network.
