Rain Washes Out Opening Weekend as Cricket Fixtures Abandoned

The new cricket season got off to a frustrating start as persistent rain forced the abandonment of all three of Saturday’s fixtures involving Overton CC.

With soggy outfields and unplayable conditions across the region, not a single match reached a conclusion, leaving players and supporters alike facing an anticlimactic opening weekend.

The 1st XI had made solid progress against Chawton CC, posting 249 for 8 from 42 overs before the weather closed in. With a competitive total on the board, Overton would have fancied their chances, but the rain arrived before a result could develop, and both sides had to settle for zero points.

The 2nd XI barely had time to get going in their clash with St Mary’s. Overton reached 22 for 1 after just three overs in response to St Mary’s 174 for 9, but any hopes of building momentum were quickly washed away as conditions deteriorated.

Meanwhile, the 3rd XI faced a tough task against Basingstoke Capital, who had piled on an imposing 302 for 8. However, Overton were denied the chance to mount a reply, with the match also abandoned before their innings could properly begin.

With all three games ending without a result, it was a disappointing start to the campaign for Overton Cricket Club. Attention now turns to next weekend, with hopes that better weather will allow the season to truly get underway.
