Polling Stations Open for Local Elections

Voters across the village are heading to the polls today in the latest round of local elections, with polling stations open until 10pm this evening.

Residents are being reminded to bring valid photo ID in order to vote.

In the Hampshire County Council election, voters in the Candovers, Oakley & Overton division will choose from five candidates:

  • Christopher Michael Aldous – Reform UK
  • Robert Charles Cooper – Liberal Democrats
  • Juliet Mary Henderson – Conservative
  • Barney Scott – Green Party
  • Michael Stockwell – Labour

The division has traditionally been a Conservative-held area, with the party winning in 2021, 2013 and 2009. In 2017, there was no overall party majority.

County councils are responsible for major local services including adult social care, education, road maintenance, libraries and long-term planning. Funding comes from council tax, business rates and government grants.

Meanwhile, voters are also casting ballots in the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council elections, where 18 of the council’s 54 seats are being contested.

In the Whitchurch, Overton & Laverstoke ward, the candidates are:

  • Chloe Ashfield – Basingstoke and Deane Independents
  • Victoria Harber – Reform UK
  • Kieran McDermott – Conservative
  • Ann Nold – Labour
  • Lucy Sloane Williams – Liberal Democrats

Recent borough council elections have resulted in no overall control in both 2023 and 2024, following Conservative control in 2021 and 2022.
