It was a mixed Saturday afternoon for Overton United, with the first team suffering a disappointing home defeat against Crofton Saints, while the reserves produced an impressive 4-1 win against Wey Valley to keep their Mike Smith Memorial Cup campaign moving in the right direction.
Overton United were beaten 2-0 by Crofton Saints at Bridge Street, with two second-half goals deciding a closely contested league fixture.
There was little to separate the two sides during the opening 45 minutes, with neither team able to find the breakthrough before the interval. Overton went into half-time with the score level, but the visitors returned after the break with renewed purpose.
Crofton Saints eventually opened the scoring in the second half, putting Overton on the back foot and giving themselves the advantage. The visitors then added a second goal later in the half to put the result beyond doubt.
Despite their efforts to get back into the game, Overton were unable to find a response and the match finished 2-0 to Crofton Saints.
The defeat means Overton United drop to 10th in the league table, with the first team now looking to regroup and pick up points in their next fixture.
There was considerably more to celebrate elsewhere for the club, though, as Overton United Reserves enjoyed an excellent afternoon at Berrydown.
The reserves recorded a convincing 4-1 victory over Wey Valley in the group stages of the Mike Smith Memorial Cup. Four goals gave Overton a comfortable margin of victory, while Wey Valley could only manage one in reply.
The result gives the reserves a positive start to their cup campaign and provides plenty of encouragement as they continue their progress through the group stages.
