Football Highlights:
It was a weekend to remember for Overton United’s first team, who clinched a thrilling 2-1 victory over Hedge End Town. The match had all the makings of a nail-biter, with neither side able to break the deadlock by halftime. But in the dying minutes, Cole Oates and Adam Hargood showed nerves of steel, scoring the decisive goals and securing the win.
Overton’s Sunday team continued their sensational late-season form, dominating Andover Ravens with a commanding 5-0 victory. Matt Dean was the star of the show, netting a stunning hat-trick, while Dan Bloma and Ethan Rizik rounded off the scoring. The team will look to carry that momentum into their upcoming match against SB Wanderers at Berrydown. With the form they’re in, another big win could be on the cards!
However, it wasn’t all positive news on the football front. Overton Vets were unable to keep pace with Woking Vets, suffering a 4-0 defeat. The team will be hoping to bounce back when they face Hambledon Vets in a midweek fixture on April 9th at Bridge Street. The veterans will be looking to put this setback behind them and finish the season on a high.
Overton Youth FC Women’s team faced Millbrook in a tough battle that saw their hopes of victory dashed. Despite some early chances and a brilliant solo effort from Amy, the team found themselves trailing 3-0 after a couple of quick second-half goals. The team’s defense, led by Louisa and Emma, and some brilliant saves from keeper Jess kept them in the game, but they were unable to mount a full comeback. With a crucial away match ahead that will likely determine 3rd place in the league, the girls will be fired up for their next challenge.
Rugby News:
It was a bittersweet end to Overton Rugby Club’s home season, as they narrowly lost to Eastleigh Twos, 31-25, at Odd Ball Lane. The team fought valiantly but came up just short. They will now focus on finishing their season strong in the final games ahead.
The Combe Gibbet to Overton Race:
On Sunday, the iconic Combe Gibbet to Overton Race returned, attracting 145 runners to take on one of the area’s toughest and most scenic challenges. The race was dominated by Oliver Starkey of Southampton Athletic Club, who completed the 10.5-mile route in 1 hour, 39 minutes, and 11 seconds. But a special mention goes to Overton Harrier Sean Holmes, who was the first local runner to cross the finish line in 1 hour, 44 minutes, and 46 seconds. It was a day to remember for all involved, and for those who missed it, be sure to pencil it into next year’s calendar!

With the season winding down, there’s still plenty of action to look forward to. From the high-flying Sunday football team to the resilient youth and veteran sides, there’s always something to cheer for in the heart of the community.
