Overton Rugby Club gets first win as United suffer football setback

Overton Rugby Club finally have their first win of the season after beating Basingstoke II 15-10 at Down Grange, providing a welcome boost for the village’s sporting sides following a weekend of mixed fortunes.

While the rugby team had plenty to celebrate, it was a tougher afternoon for Overton United’s first team, who suffered a 4-1 defeat away at Bishop’s Waltham Dynamos.

There was better news for United’s Sunday side, who picked up a point on the road, while the reserves were left waiting after their scheduled fixture was postponed.

Overton Rugby Club’s victory was the weekend’s standout result, with the side edging out Basingstoke II by five points in a closely contested encounter at Down Grange. Securing that first win of the campaign will come as a relief for the players and supporters, giving the team something positive to build on as the season progresses.

The result provides an opportunity for Overton to gain confidence and carry that momentum into their upcoming fixtures. After waiting for their first victory, the players will be keen to make the most of the result and turn it into a stronger run of performances.

It was a less enjoyable outing for Overton United’s first team, who returned from their trip to Bishop’s Waltham Dynamos on the wrong end of a 4-1 scoreline. The defeat leaves the side with work to do as they look to regroup and get back to winning ways in their next match.

United will be hoping to put the result behind them quickly, with the opportunity to respond when they return to action. A disappointing away performance can be difficult to take, but the focus will now turn to the next fixture and the chance to produce a better result.

The club’s reserves were also due to play over the weekend, with Darby Green and Potley Youth U23 Dynamos scheduled to provide the opposition. However, that fixture was postponed, meaning the reserves will have to wait for another opportunity to get out on the pitch.

There was a more encouraging result for Overton United’s Sunday side, who drew 1-1 away at Hackwood Harriers. The team came away with a share of the points after an even contest, avoiding defeat on the road and giving themselves something to build on in their next outing.

While a victory would have been preferable, a draw away from home keeps the Sunday side moving forward and offers a positive takeaway from the weekend’s action.

With plenty of the campaign still to come, all eyes will now turn to the next round of fixtures as Overton’s teams look to build on the positives, respond to the disappointments and give their supporters more to celebrate.
