A vital transport lifeline for Overton residents has officially been saved, thanks to a landmark decision by Overton Parish Council to directly fund the local bus service from its annual budget.
Earlier this year, Overton News & Views reported that the future of the much-loved local bus service was under serious threat, with funding only secured until September 2025. In response, the Parish Council stepped in with emergency funding from its existing budget to keep the wheels turning while a longer-term solution was explored.
Now, after an extensive consultation with residents—both current users and potential future passengers—the Council has announced it will take the bold step of permanently funding the service from its own budget.
“It’s a significant commitment, but it’s absolutely the right decision for our community,” said a Parish Council spokesperson. “This service is more than just a bus; it’s a vital link for many, especially those who rely on it for accessing shops, appointments, and social activities.”
Following a competitive tender process, the Council has awarded a four-year contract to Basingstoke Community Transport, with the new service beginning on 2nd September 2025. Until then, the current service will continue without interruption.
Final details, including the new timetable and fare structure, are being finalised and will be published in the September edition of Overton News & Views.
The Council has also paid tribute to Councillor John Raw, who led the efforts to secure the future of the service. “John has worked tirelessly on behalf of the village, and this outcome is a direct result of his dedication and persistence,” said the Council.
In an age when rural transport links are disappearing across the country, Overton’s commitment to preserving its community service is both heartening—and inspiring.
