Overton ‘outstanding’ in Whiteley whitewash

The celebrations from the Overton United (OUFC) first team were heard in Whitchurch today following their home win against Whiteley.

Overton United beat league champion prospects Whitelely Wanderers 4-1 at the Overton Recreation Centre (ORC).

At half-time, Overton’s Gary Savory told Overton Radio, “Overton are going to dampen the coastal town’s hopes of winning the title”.

We appreciate his poetic efforts.

At the final whistle, the Whiteley Wanderers manager was heard to say, “Well done Overton, that was outstanding”.

The home team deserved the compliment. OUFC are now 8th in the uhlSport Hampshire Premier League (Division 1). Overton’s efforts today are likely to keep Whiteley away from the top spot. Rising one place in the league, Overton’s win today takes the Wanderers away from their promotional aspirations.

Over the 90-minutes, Overton were clearly the dominant team, goalkeeper Aaron Bufton was barely troubled by matchplay.

Goal scorers were Grant Powell (first half penalty), Jared Wetherick, Louis Wilson and Luke Hall.

Luke Hall’s 90th minute goal was reason for the subsequent raucous celebration in the changing rooms at the ORC.

Hedge End Rangers are top of the uhlsport Hampshire League (Division 1). Whiteley Wanderers are now third.

Locally, the Rotten Hill Cup derby will be on Sunday May 5th, with OUFC attempting to retain the cup against rivals Whitchurch. Tickets are available from the ORC, The Party Booth and The Red Lion.
