It was a day of highs and lows for Overton Cricket Club as the club’s three senior teams took to the field — with two suffering defeats and one celebrating a convincing win.
The 1st XI came up short against Chawton, falling to a 61-run defeat in a low-scoring affair. Chawton won the toss and elected to bat first, posting 153 all out — a total that looked modest but ultimately proved more than enough. Overton’s reply faltered, with wickets falling regularly. Despite some resistance from Sam Cross (31) and Nick Tomlin (25), the side was dismissed for just 92 in 27 overs.
It was a tougher day for the 2nd XI, who were soundly beaten by East Anton at Berrydown. East Anton put on an imposing 246/7 in their allotted 40 overs, piling pressure on the home side from the outset. In reply, Overton struggled to build any momentum and were bowled out for just 104, still 142 runs short, and with 17 overs to spare.
However, there was cause for celebration as the 3rd XI flew the Overton flag with pride, notching up a confident six-wicket win over Ropley. Chasing a target of 149, the side paced their innings well and crossed the line with 7.2 overs to spare — a comfortable and composed performance that brought some shine to the weekend’s results.
Plenty to ponder and plenty to build on — Overton will be hoping for stronger batting displays next week as the season continues.
