Advice for the heat
Hot weather can feel nice, but it can turn risky fast. Here are simple ways to stay well when it heats up:
- Keep cool indoors where you can. Close blinds or curtains in the day to block direct sun. Open windows in the evening when the air feels fresher.
- Drink water often. Donβt wait until you feel thirsty. Aim for small regular sips through the day. Cut back on alcohol and too much caffeine as they can dry you out.
- Dress light. Loose, light-coloured clothes help your body stay cooler. Cotton works well.
- Slow your pace. Avoid hard work or exercise in the hottest part of the day, usually late morning to mid-afternoon.
- Look after the vulnerable. Check in on older people, young children, and anyone who may struggle with heat.
- Travel smart. Keep water with you. Plan journeys outside peak heat if you can.
- Never leave anyone in a parked car, even for a short time.
- Watch for warning signs like dizziness, headaches, confusion, or nausea. If that happens, get to a cool place, drink water, and rest. If it gets worse, seek medical help.
- Dog owners are urged not to walk their pets during the hottest part of the day. Pavements can become hot enough to burn paws, and dogs can quickly suffer from heat exhaustion. Walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are lower, and make sure they always have access to fresh water and shade.
Trains
South Western Railway will be running a reduced service today because of the extreme heat. Passengers are being advised to check before they travel, as disruption and timetable changes are expected across parts of the network.
Preschool & Playgroup
Overton Preschool and Playgroup will be closed this afternoon due to the high temperatures.
The preschool has confirmed that both settings will open from 8:45am until midday on Wednesday and Thursday. The revised hours are designed to avoid the hottest part of the day and help keep children and staff safe during the heatwave.
Testbourne School
Testbourne School has announced it will close at 12 noon today as temperatures continue to rise across the region.
Stagecoach
Buses are running as normal. However, Stagecoach have said: “While we aim to keep services running as smoothly as possible, there may be occasional disruption due to the weather conditions. Weβd recommend checking the Stagecoach app or our website before you travel for the latest updates.”
740 Shuttle Bus
The 740 Overton shuttle bus will not run on Thursday due to forecast high temperatures.
The decision has been made to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of both passengers and drivers.
