Libraries across Hampshire are set to bloom with imagination as this year’s Summer Reading Challenge gets underway on Saturday 12 July, inviting children to lose themselves in a world where stories and nature grow side by side.
This year’s enchanting theme, Story Garden, encourages children aged 4 to 11 to combine their love of reading with the wonder of the outdoors. Organised in partnership with The Reading Agency, the challenge will run in Hampshire until Saturday 13 September, offering families a free and engaging way to keep young minds active over the holidays.
Participants are encouraged to read six books over the summer, collecting fun stickers as they go. Those who complete the challenge will be awarded a certificate and a sustainable wooden medal—a keepsake to mark their summer of literary adventure.
Councillor Steve Forster, Hampshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, highlighted the programme’s importance:
“Establishing an early love of reading has so many clear and wide-ranging benefits… I encourage as many children as possible to take part and to get out and about in our fantastic libraries this summer.”
The initiative is free and open to all Hampshire library members, whether they live, work, or study in the county.
