Guest Speakers Announced for Churchyard Survey Day on 18th May

The upcoming Churchyard Survey Day on Saturday 18th May promises to be a day of learning, discovery, and community engagement, with two distinguished guest speakers confirmed to contribute to the event. Organised in partnership with Sustainable Overton and the Overton Biodiversity Society, the event aims to encourage interest in local ecology and biodiversity for all ages.

At 1:30pm, Claire Mitchell, widely known as “The Garden Editor”, will deliver a talk entitled “Plants for Pollinators”. Claire is an experienced horticulturalist and communicator whose mission is to help people “improve your garden without costing the earth.” Her session will provide practical advice on selecting and nurturing plants that support pollinators, with a strong emphasis on environmentally sustainable gardening practices. Further information about her work can be found at www.gardeneditor.co.uk.

The second speaker, Andrew Monk, will present at 3:00pm on the topic of “Life in Our Soil”. This session will include a practical, hands-on exploration of the rich and often overlooked ecosystem beneath our feet. Participants will have the opportunity to use microscopes to observe soil-dwelling micro-organisms, including microbeasts and potentially tardigrades. The session is designed to be interactive and is particularly suitable for children and families.

Both presentations are free to attend, suitable for all age groups, and are intended to engage members of the community with an interest in biodiversity, gardening, or environmental stewardship. The event is inclusive and open to all, regardless of background or faith.

The organisers wish to express their sincere gratitude to both speakers for their generosity in supporting this event and helping to foster a deeper understanding of the natural world within the local community.
