Cricket whites are being dusted off, stumps hammered in, and scorebooks opened once again as the first weekend of the new cricket season arrives with a full swing of leather on willow.
The action begins this Saturday with a traditional preseason friendly against local rivals Whitchurch, offering players a chance to shake off the winter cobwebs and ease into the season with a bit of neighbourly competition. Expect a relaxed atmosphere—but don’t be fooled, bragging rights are still very much up for grabs.
Then, it’s straight into the deep end on Sunday as Overton hit the road for the first official fixture of the campaign: a National Village Knockout tie away at Bramshaw. The longer journey will be matched by a more intense contest, as this knockout format means there’s no room for early-season errors.
Team selection is expected to blend experience with promising youth, and while results are always nice, this weekend is as much about setting the tone, building form, and reigniting the camaraderie that makes village cricket such a beloved summer fixture.
Whether it’s the clang of the ball on the pavilion roof or the gentle murmur of applause for a well-timed cover drive, the sounds of cricket are back—and Overton is ready.
