This May, Overton will come together to honour the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day with a series of special events, paying tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for freedom during World War II.
Beacon Lighting at Sapley Lane Playing Fields
The commemorations will begin on the evening of May 8th, when a beacon will be lit at Sapley Lane Playing Fields at 9.30 PM. The beacon lighting, a time-honoured tradition, serves as a symbolic gesture of remembrance and unity, mirroring similar events taking place across the UK.
Beacons have long played a role in national celebrations, from marking the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee to historical anniversaries, and this year’s VE Day tribute will be no exception. Residents are encouraged to gather at the playing fields for this poignant moment, where community leaders will say a few words before the beacon is ignited.
Celebrations at The Red Lion on May 10th
The commemorations will continue on Saturday, May 10th at The Red Lion, where a special event will bring together history, tradition, and entertainment in true British style. The pub will welcome Lola Gibbard, the Pearly Queen of Norbury, who will bring a touch of East End heritage to Overton with her distinctive attire and Cockney charm.
The Pearly Kings and Queens, a tradition dating back to the 19th century, are a celebrated part of London’s cultural heritage. Their striking pearl-buttoned outfits and dedication to charitable work make them a beloved fixture of British society, and Gibbard’s appearance is sure to be a highlight of the day.
Classic British Cars on Display
Adding to the atmosphere, the Overton Classic Car Society will be showcasing a stunning collection of classic British cars outside The Red Lion. Car enthusiasts and history buffs alike will have the chance to admire a range of beautifully maintained vehicles from Britain’s golden era of motoring. From vintage Jaguars to iconic Minis and Rolls-Royces, the display will offer a nostalgic glimpse into the past and celebrate the engineering prowess of the nation.
A Community United in Remembrance
The 80th anniversary of VE Day is a moment for reflection and gratitude. As the years pass, the opportunity to hear first-hand accounts from those who lived through the war becomes increasingly rare. Events like these ensure that the sacrifices of the wartime generation are not forgotten and that younger generations continue to understand the significance of this historic day.
Local residents are encouraged to attend both events, whether to witness the beacon lighting in a moment of solemn remembrance or to join in the lively celebrations at The Red Lion. Together, Overton will mark this milestone anniversary with respect, pride, and a true sense of community spirit.
