Overton United’s veterans had a mixed weekend of league action, with the Over 35s suffering defeat away at Hambledon, while the Over 50s opened their league campaign with a 5-3 victory at Bridge Street.
The Over 35s travelled to Hambledon and found themselves with a mountain to climb at half-time, going into the break 4-0 down.
However, Overton showed plenty of character after the restart, producing a much-improved second-half performance. Jared Wetherick got the Vets on the scoresheet, while the team continued to work hard and created a number of further chances.
Overton were also awarded a penalty, but unfortunately couldn’t convert from the spot. Despite their best efforts and a strong second-half showing, Hambledon held on to claim a 4-1 victory.
There was much better news for the Over 50s, who began their league campaign in winning fashion with a 4-3 victory over Finchampsted at Bridge Street.
Overton raced into a commanding 4-0 lead and looked to be cruising, with goals from Lee Harris and Matt Dean, alongside a brace from man of the match Ritchie Kalwarczyk.
Finchampsted responded with a late surge, scoring three goals to suddenly put the result in doubt. However, Overton held their nerve to see out the game and secure all three points.
A mixed set of results, then, but plenty of positives for both Overton United Vets sides, particularly the strong second-half fightback from the Over 35s and the winning start made by the Over 50s.
