After plans to move into the old One Stop shop fell through, the Overton Living Room is pressing ahead with a fresh new focus — starting with a free weekly club for local kids.
Launching Tuesday 10th June, “Unplug & Play” will run every Tuesday from 3:45pm to 5:30pm at Stanley’s Café. The sessions are open to all children in Years 5 to 8, offering a welcoming, screen-free space to play games, build LEGO, and enjoy a relaxed hangout after school — all at no cost.
Hosted in partnership with Stanley’s, the café will be open with extended hours and a full menu for those who fancy a milkshake or slice of cake (purchases optional). The Overton Living Room team will be on hand with board games, LEGO kits, and friendly volunteers to help keep the fun flowing.
The project marks the first public youth activity organised by the Overton Living Room, the community group that had initially hoped to establish a permanent base in the old One Stop building. While that plan came to an end earlier this year, organisers have been quick to pivot and bring their mission — creating welcoming, inclusive community spaces — to life in new ways.
“We may not have the building, but we’ve still got the vision,” said a spokesperson for the group. “Unplug & Play is a first step — a small way of giving young people a safe, friendly space in the heart of the village.”
Parents should note that Unplug & Play is not a childcare service. Children are welcome to drop in and leave as they please, and while volunteers are present to support play, there will be no formal supervision or registration. Organisers encourage only those comfortable with this setup to attend.
Whether it’s a LEGO masterpiece, a board game showdown, or just a chat over a hot chocolate, Tuesday afternoons at Stanley’s look set to become a new favourite in Overton’s community calendar.
