VIEWPOINT: A Community Under Siege: Addressing the Rising Antisocial Behaviour in Overton

I’ve lived in Overton for 20 years now. This is a village known for its community spirit and friendly atmosphere. However, it has been facing a troubling wave of anti-social behaviour recently, particularly from groups of young people causing repeated disruptions. These incidents have not only upset local residents but have also resulted in serious damage to community resources.

One recent incident that has left the community frustrated took place at Berrydown, where individuals vandalized valuable football equipment. Overton Youth Football Club has worked tirelessly to provide a positive, structured outlet for young people in the area, helping them stay active, build friendships, and develop valuable skills. However, the club’s efforts to maintain these facilities are now being challenged by this senseless destruction. The cost of repairs and replacements has put a strain on the club, which relies heavily on donations and fundraising to keep running.

Yet, while community members have repeatedly raised their concerns and reported incidents to the police, there appears to be little response. So far, there’s been no clear action or public plan from the authorities to tackle this issue head-on, leaving many residents feeling unheard and vulnerable. The lack of police intervention has led to frustration, and some are beginning to question why this ongoing problem isn’t being given the attention it deserves.

While the majority of Overton’s young people are responsible and contribute positively to the village, a small group seems determined to undermine the sense of safety and respect that most residents cherish. This behaviour isn’t just “kids being kids” – it’s destructive, and it’s costing our community time, money, and peace of mind. For a village that takes pride in its sense of unity, these incidents are a painful reminder of the impact of anti-social behaviour and the urgent need for a response that both prevents further damage and holds those responsible accountable.
