The Red Lion is gearing up for a double celebration this autumn, marking both Halloween and Mexico’s famous Día De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with a weekend of colour, culture, and community spirit.
The festivities begin with the pub’s annual Halloween Fancy Dress Party on Friday 31st October, promising all the usual spooky fun. But the celebrations don’t stop there. On Saturday 1st November, The Red Lion transforms into a vibrant homage to Mexico’s Día De Los Muertos — a joyful festival honouring loved ones who have passed away.
In keeping with tradition, guests are invited to bring photos of deceased family members or friends, along with a small offering of their favourite food or drink. These will be placed on a beautifully decorated Ofrenda (Altar) inside the pub, adorned with bright colours, flowers, and candles — a heartfelt nod to the belief that death is a natural part of life.
During the day, visitors can enjoy Afternoon Tea, take time to lay their offerings, and help raise funds for local veterans’ charity VIA (Veterans in Action).
As night falls, the atmosphere turns festive with a Mexican Food and Music Evening, featuring a four-course menu of authentic Mexican dishes — think sizzling fajitas, tacos, churros, and, of course, tequila. Tickets for the evening are £30 per person, with limited spaces available.
Guests are encouraged to embrace the spirit of the occasion by dressing in traditional Mexican or Day of the Dead costumes — from sugar skull makeup to colourful embroidered attire.
“Day of the Dead is about remembering loved ones with joy, not sorrow,” said a spokesperson for The Red Lion. “It’s a chance for our community to come together, celebrate life, and support a fantastic local cause.”
The ancient tradition of leaving offerings dates back over 3,000 years to the Aztecs, who believed the spirits of the departed would return home and need provisions for their journey.
