Overton United suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday, bowing out of the League Cup after a narrow 2-1 loss to Nursling and Shirley at Bridge Street.
The visitors struck first just before the break, taking the lead in the 43rd minute to silence the home crowd. But Overton responded strongly after the restart. Ten minutes into the second half, Macauley Martin won a free kick in a dangerous position, and Colby Craig stepped up to curl home a superb equaliser in the 56th minute.
With the tie finely balanced, it was Nursling and Shirley who found the decisive breakthrough. A well-worked move in the 76th minute restored their lead, and despite late pressure from the hosts, Overton couldn’t find a second equaliser.
The result ends Overton’s League Cup campaign and marks their first loss of the season. There’s little time to dwell, however, with a chance of immediate revenge next Saturday when the two sides meet again at Bridge Street. Kick-off is at 3pm.
