Overton United’s return to the Hampshire Premier League Senior Division began with a narrow defeat on Saturday afternoon as they were beaten 2-1 away to Southsea Sports.
The hosts made a bright start and took the lead after 11 minutes before doubling their advantage on the half-hour mark, leaving Overton with plenty of work to do.
The visitors responded well and reduced the deficit on 37 minutes when Cole Oates found the back of the net to make it 2-1 before the interval, giving Overton hope heading into the second half.
Despite pushing for an equaliser after the break, Overton were unable to find another goal as Southsea Sports held on to claim all three points.
It was a disappointing start to the new campaign for Overton, but there were encouraging signs as the newly promoted side battled back after going two goals behind.
Overton United will now look to bounce back in their next league fixture as they continue their return to life in the Hampshire Premier League Senior Division with an away trip to Denmead next Saturday.
