The new cricket season commenced this weekend, but it proved to be a testing start for Overton’s sides.
On Saturday, Overton Cricket XI travelled to Whitchurch for a pre-season friendly. After being put into the field, Overton were unable to contain a strong Whitchurch batting line-up, who posted an imposing total of 240 for 7 from their allotted 40 overs. In reply, Overton showed glimpses of promise but were ultimately bowled out for 204, falling 36 runs short with five deliveries remaining.
Sunday brought further disappointment as Overton’s 1st XI were eliminated from the National Village Cup. Batting first against Bramshaw, Overton managed 203 runs before being dismissed. Bramshaw responded emphatically, reaching the target for the loss of just one wicket and with 13 overs to spare, sealing a convincing nine-wicket victory.
While the results were not in Overton’s favour, both matches provided valuable match practice ahead of the competitive season, with opportunities for the teams to regroup and build momentum in the weeks ahead.
