Could You Be an On-Call Firefighter?

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be the person who drops everything to help when the alarm sounds — this could be your moment.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are on the lookout for new on-call (or retained) firefighters – local people who can respond quickly to emergencies when their pagers go off.

On-call firefighters are paid and trained professionals, but unlike their full-time colleagues, they’re part of the community – working or living nearby and ready to leap into action when needed. They come from all walks of life: shop owners, delivery drivers, office workers, tradespeople, and stay-at-home parents.

All that’s required is that you’re over 18, live or work close enough to the fire station to get there quickly, and have a real sense of commitment to keeping your community safe.

You’ll receive full training, ongoing support, and be expected to attend the weekly three-hour drill night every Monday evening from 7pm at the station on Station Road – just opposite the doctors’ surgery.

Whether your boss is happy for you to dash off when the call comes in, or you simply want to serve your community in your spare time, this could be one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do.

To find out more, drop into the fire station on a Monday night or visit www.hantsfire.gov.uk.
