The 62-year-old man suffered serious, potentially life-threatening and life-changing injuries in the incident, which happened shortly before 6pm on Sunday, August 23.
The pilot was trapped inside the aircraft and had to be freed by firefighters before being taken by road ambulance to Southampton General Hospital.
Popham Airfield manager David Hammer has confirmed that an investigation into the cause of the crash is now underway.
He said the aircraft was a flexwing microlight and that the pilot was a student flyer nearing the end of his training.
In a statement, Mr Hammer said: "Popham Airfield management can confirm that an incident involving a flexwing microlight aircraft occurred on site yesterday, Sunday, 23 August, at approximately 6pm.
"The incident occurred during landing. The sole occupant of the aircraft was a student pilot. Emergency services responded promptly to the scene, and the pilot was subsequently transported to Southampton General Hospital for medical care."
He added that the airfield's thoughts were with the pilot and his family, while thanking the emergency services who attended.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has been notified and is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Popham Airfield will remain closed to all aircraft movements until the preliminary investigation has concluded and it is considered safe for operations to resume.
Further information about when the airfield will reopen is expected to be issued in due course.
Police, ambulance crews, an air ambulance and firefighters from across Hampshire attended the scene.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service said crews from Rushmoor, Andover, Basingstoke and Winchester were sent to the airfield after reports of a light aircraft crash.
One casualty was released from the aircraft and handed into the care of paramedics, while firefighters made the aircraft safe before handing the scene over to police.
South Central Ambulance Service said it received a 999 call at 5.43pm reporting a microlight crash with the pilot trapped. The first ambulance crew arrived at 5.59pm, with an air ambulance and critical care doctors also attending.
Hampshire Constabulary said officers were called at 5.45pm following reports of a single light aircraft which had overturned.
The force confirmed that the pilot, a man in his 60s, had suffered serious and potentially life-threatening and life-changing injuries and had been taken to hospital for treatment.
Officers have attended the scene and liaised with the Air Accidents Investigation Branch as the investigation continues.
