Overton United’s great start to season continues

Gary Savory brings you the latest updates from Overton United Football Club as we head into the festive season.

1st Team Success

The 1st team, competing in the Hampshire League Division One, currently sit in 2nd place, just two points behind local rivals Broughton, with 15 league games left to play. Additionally, they are still active in the Hampshire Cup, North Hampshire Cup, and League Cup competitions as we approach the festive break.

November and December will be crucial months, featuring several important league and cup matches that could define whether silverware is on the cards this season. The squad has been training hard at the excellent Berrydown facilities and playing home games at Bridge Street in Overton, which boasts the best pitch in the league thanks to the dedicated work of ORC ground staff, especially Kevin Radcliffe and his team.

Reserves on Top Form

The Reserves are also performing exceptionally well, currently sitting at the top of Basingstoke Division 1 on goal difference, just ahead of reigning champions North Warnborough. It’s shaping up to be a thrilling title race, with many local Overton players stepping up. A special mention goes to Louis McCann, who consistently finds the back of the net almost every weekend.

Under 23s Making Strides

The midweek Under 23s team has been impressive, moving up to 3rd place in the Hampshire Division 1 East league. With games in hand, they are still in the mix for a top-two finish as we head into the festive period. Recent wins against strong sides like Andover New Street and Infinity (whose senior teams play in the Wessex League) bode well for the future of Overton United. It’s also fantastic to see so many U23 players contributing to the 1st and Res teams on Saturdays, highlighting their commitment and growth within the club.

Sunday Team Push for Promotion

The Sunday team, competing in Andover Division 2, currently sit 2nd in the league, just one point behind the leaders with a game in hand. They are also still in contention in two cup competitions. The team faces a challenging run of six consecutive away fixtures in November and December, but their resilience on the road should see them through. Special recognition goes to Matthew Dean, who has scored an impressive 13 goals in just 8 appearances.

Veterans Fighting Hard

The Sunday Veterans team is battling in the tough Farnham and District Premier League. Despite a challenging start with just one point from four matches, the team remains determined to turn things around and secure their place in the league. We have faith they’ll find their form soon.

Remembering a Legend

We are saddened to report the passing of Overton United legend Michael ‘Butch’ Watts on October 22nd, 2024. ‘Butch’ was a key player in the club’s historic 1965/66 season, where Overton United won the Hants A Cup, the Basingstoke Junior A Cup, the Basingstoke League title, and the All Champions Cup. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Les and the entire family during this difficult time.

Here’s to a successful and exciting remainder of the season for all Overton United teams.
